When I think about the most important people in my life and the qualities they possess, I feel fortunate to have been raised by a smart, strong, supportive and loving family. When my mother told me she had multiple myeloma, we were sitting having breakfast and I remember her saying to me, “I have to tell you something, but it is not a big deal.”
The myeloma was discovered in 2007 and she told us in 2010 that she had just begun treatment. At the time my mother told me, I was working in Wilton filling in for a woman who was being treated for multiple myeloma. I was in shock. On my way home, I called my husband to tell him and said that we needed to do something.
So, I signed him up to run the NYC half marathon with the MMRF! He had three months to train. We rallied and raised money, but most importantly we demonstrated our commitment to supporting my mom and the MMRF. Right before the race, my son, who was eight at the time, said it best, “Everything has a cure, you just need to find it.” That is why I am hiking - to work towards finding a cure!
I am thrilled to have this opportunity to hike the Grand Canyon with the MM4MM team. My brother, Colin Coogan, and I are taking on this challenge together. We are doing this for our mom, loving wife, mother of three and grandmother of 10! We are also hiking for our friends who are fighting multiple myeloma. Let’s do this!
