I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in March 2012 at the age of 54 during a physical. It was quite a shock to my family and I. Initially, I was told I would need to have a port put in and begin chemotherapy immediately.
Luckily, my wife encouraged me to have a consultation with a myeloma specialist and I was told that my multiple myeloma was smoldering and that treatment would not start immediately. Since then, I have been going for checkups every three months. I am fortunate as my myeloma has stayed smoldering since then.
My daughter told me about this opportunity. I have supported the work that the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation has been doing since my diagnosis. Being a patient, I know that I may be the beneficiary of these life-saving drugs someday. I consider it a privilege to be able to hike Mount Fuji for this cause, for myself and for all of the patients with multiple myeloma.
